Change - Tini - Making HOKEY Pokey!!!!!!!!

Today we learnt a great deal about Geothermal activity. It was amazing to learn about how unique and special Rotorua is to have geothermal activity. Whaea Emma at the Whare Taonga (Museum) talked to us about the different layers we have in the earth, like the INNER CORE, OUTER CORE, MANTLE and the CRUST, we helped her to guess some of those layers. Oh my we learnt that the bubbles we see coming out of the mud pools is created by the gas inside the magma, and it comes up and up and eventually there is a volcanic eruption. DID YOU KNOW that Rotorua is in a Caldera from 140,000 years ago (so the experts say). We did lots of things, we went up to the top of the museum to look at the places formed by the Rotorua volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. We went for a walk to sulphur point BEHIND the museum to measure the temperature of the water, and to use all our senses to describe what we could SEE,FEEL,HEAR AND SMELL. Last of all we made HOKEY Pokey because this illustrates how magma is superheated under the ground, underneath us. Did you know that the bubbles you see is the gas that forms from underneath, and it mixes with the mud and water around it. Then what happens is, it builds up so much pressure it finds a way to escape, causing a volcanic eruption, then its so hot it oozes out, and then once it comes to the surface it hardens, and hockey pokey is an example of magma, in other words HOT LAVA, and once it gets to the top, it cools. WE HAD FUN today......... Last of all we would like to give our sincere thanks and appreciation to Te Arawa Iwi for donating the cost of hiring us a bus for us to use....and thank you to Matua Jimmy, thank you to Matua Wallace, and Whaea Analise for supervising us today.
