FOTOPEDIA & SKITCH: Historic Centre of Oaxaca, America.
Today three tamariki and I worked with Paula on creative ideas using the school IPADS, we used the fotopedia app (digital pictures to inspire writing) and Skitch app a useful and effective tool that they can use to write on top of their picture from fotopedia.
Amazing Amazing.....we did have some difficulty uploading their work from the IPADS and we had to use a keydrive and my teacher laptop to upload their mahi. The children worked hard and had so much fun.
I will use this tool again as a tool to inspire the children's writing....Whaea Liz

http://youtu.be/wXVX3nuemiE
Can you recognise the first speaker? Who is he?
What were we learning about?
What was important to know about making bread?
What was your favourite part about that day?
Enjoy!
Te Manu Taunaha
This was composed by Mikaere Norris, teacher in Space 9 bilingual class. He composed it for the upcoming Rotorua Primary Schools' Cultural Festival for our School group that is performing in it next term.
The song talks about the whakapapa of Kawaha, our school identity and incorporates our school values. It is about the bird claiming the lands as he flies over it....the words and update on the meaning of this will be updated at a later time by Matua Mikaere.

Rotational Symmetry.... on PhotoPeach
Its been an interesting last few weeks learning about tesselations. The children were learning to create a simple tesselation which you can come in and see displayed on our classroom maths wall. They also made butterflies to show symmetry (reflection). It was a challenge folding and cutting our the shapes we each needed to create a paper butterfly. We also used our pencil drawing skills to show the refection of objects or people's cut out magazine faces. Overall the experience was enjoyed by all...especially when children made comments like "I like maths this is fun!". Kia kaha tonu Space 8 for the rest of your school term, we have 3 weeks to go!!!

Class Discussion - Formula for Communication
This afternoon we revised our brainstorm ideas about COMMUNICATION....WE played a game of Chinese Whispers to illustrate what we need in order to communicate.
We found that we need: A MESSAGE, we need to SEND the message, the message needs to be DECODED, and then it needs to be received by the RECEIVER. We played the game two times and each time the message ended differently. We realised it is important that it needs to be understood. We talked more about what communication looks like, and we think that a message can be sent through a variety of ways, e.g. body language, pictures, words, letters, texts, phonecalls, voice calls, voice messages etc...WATCH THIS SPACE FOR MORE......

Teacher News!!!
This week at our latest teacher meeting we were reminded about what "effects" our classrooms the most - If you would like more information, google; John Hattie - Visible learning.
We looked at several things, like;
We had to rank which were most important from 1 being MOST important to 12 LEAST important. Obviously those ranked from 1 to 6 were ranked as the things that will most likely make a positive change in your child's learning in school.
I LIKE THE RESULTS: THE TOP THREE THINGS THAT CAUSE THE MOST POSITIVE CHANGE IN A CLASSROOM ARE;
1, STUDENT EXPECTATIONS 2, CLASSROOM DISCUSSION 3,FEEDBACK
Come in some time and have a chat about this, it's wonderful news.
Leave a positive comment if you like. Thank you
Maori Television ; KORERO MAI

Korero Mai
This is the second week of the holidays.
I have been watching "MAORI TELEVISION" they have an awesome Maori language programme that teaches te reo Maori in an interactive way. Today they taught Toia Mai - the haka.
Interesting things to know about KORERO MAI that are similar to what we learn in class:
They teach kupu hou.
They teach commands.
They teach waiata and haka.
Two things we can do in our class similar to Korero Mai: Role play.

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?
Ko tenei te wiki tuatahi mo nga hararei: This is the first week of the July school holidays. Whaea Liz is looking into our new topic called "COMMUNICATION".
She would like to invite you to share your ideas about communication...you can leave her a message at hoganl@kawaha-point.school.nz or come in and see her to share your aspirations and ideas for this terms topic or leave a positive post.
Communication: You need a message, you need a way of sending that message, you need a person at the other end to receive the message.
Can you guess what message this picture is sending? Who might be receiving this message and where do you think this message might have come from? How do you know that?

This morning we watched a Youtube video of Toni Rolleston-Cummins reading her book she wrote called The Seven Sisters of Matariki.
We enjoyed it, we hope you do too. After we listened to the story we made a Matariki calendar and talked about the similarities and differences of her story and the Story of the Seven Mischief stars written by Space 10 many many years ago.

Change - Tini - Making HOKEY Pokey!!!!!!!!
Today we learnt a great deal about Geothermal activity.
It was amazing to learn about how unique and special Rotorua is to have geothermal activity.
Whaea Emma at the Whare Taonga (Museum) talked to us about the different layers we have in the earth, like the INNER CORE, OUTER CORE, MANTLE and the CRUST, we helped her to guess some of those layers.
Oh my we learnt that the bubbles we see coming out of the mud pools is created by the gas inside the magma, and it comes up and up and eventually there is a volcanic eruption. DID YOU KNOW that Rotorua is in a Caldera from 140,000 years ago (so the experts say).
We did lots of things, we went up to the top of the museum to look at the places formed by the Rotorua volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. We went for a walk to sulphur point BEHIND the museum to measure the temperature of the water, and to use all our senses to describe what we could SEE,FEEL,HEAR AND SMELL.
Last of all we made HOKEY Pokey because this illustrates how magma is superheated under the ground, underneath us. Did you know that the bubbles you see is the gas that forms from underneath, and it mixes with the mud and water around it. Then what happens is, it builds up so much pressure it finds a way to escape, causing a volcanic eruption, then its so hot it oozes out, and then once it comes to the surface it hardens, and hockey pokey is an example of magma, in other words HOT LAVA, and once it gets to the top, it cools. WE HAD FUN today......... Last of all we would like to give our sincere thanks and appreciation to Te Arawa Iwi for donating the cost of hiring us a bus for us to use....and thank you to Matua Jimmy, thank you to Matua Wallace, and Whaea Analise for supervising us today.

CHANGE: INvisible Writing Day one
Today Space08 did another experiment, by squeezing the lemon juice into a lid, we then used a cotton bud to soak up the liquid. We used this liquid to write a hidden message. We can't see it at the moment, because its INVISIBLE. Next (This Friday day TWO) we will use an Iron (heat) to REVEAL our hidden messages (pictures) to each other.
This is day ONE of our experiment.
Ko Gianne tenei
Ko Isla tenei
Ko Teare tenei
Ko Takoha tenei
Ko Taureikura tenei
WE HOPE YOU COME BACK TO TAKE A LOOK AT OUR HIDDEN MESSAGES!!!
We are bloggoing together!
Today our class had a session on blogging, we used a wallwisher website to post some post its to share what we think about change.
We only added two today....watch this space for more

ICT - Computers - How we use computers to enhance our writing;
Well last term we really wanted to learn how to green screen. Green screening is about cutting out a picture and adding it to a new background. Whaea Liz found out that we can use a program called pizap to do this the easy way. This means we don't need a green screen background.
Follow these easy steps;
1.go to www.pizap.com
2.Edit a photo
3.upload a photo (preferably the background first)
4.Add a cut out - upload another picture (the picture you want to edit onto the background)
5.Use the Green circle (paintbrush) to highlight the parts you want to show up on the background, you can rub it out by clicking the red button to rub out any mistakes.
6.then click finish
7.Lastly just download it to save it onto your computer not the save button. Download first then save it into a file.
We have 2 experts in our class: Taureikura and Ahina. Ask them if you need help.
Here are some examples of our work
If you think we are A M A Z I N G please leave us a positive comment; thanks!
What is yeast?
This term (term 2) we are learning about CHANGE - chemistry around us. We are looking at reversable and irreversable changes. So far we have baked bread and we have made jelly.
In this example we looked at "what is yeast?" and how yeast works to make dough rise. We loved making and eating our bread.
Mum and Dad ask me about how I made the bread;
We also made jelly. This was fun, we learnt that jelly can dissolve in cold or hot water but it will dissolve faster in hot water because heat makes the parts of water move faster.
Our jelly pictures will be uploaded at another time: sorry.
Term 2 : Leisure and Work
Last term we did a lot of work on leisure and work and then we looked at "what a balanced life?" might look like. It was an amazing opportunity to share with Tyreece what his life after school looks like. For example, Tyreece is learning to play guitar once a week with a tutor, and sings with his Dad in their family band. He owns a couple of horses and we went to his house (farm) to watch him ride his horse. But first he had to brush his horse (work) before riding it (leisure). It was amazing! We think that Tyreece has a balanced life because he works hard to look after his horse and then he gets to ride it, he plays guitar and sometimes plays a tune or two for us to enjoy. He also plays sport and is learning how to be a team member, plus he is learning how to stay fit. WOW - TUMEKE KOE TYREECE, from Space 8 children.

Mahi tahi - working together
I tenei taumata (1), i te wiki 3, Ko nga tamariki a Space 8 kei te whakawhiti korero e pa ana ki te taenga mai o nga Maori me nga Pakeha ki Aotearoa.
Ko nga tamariki, Ko Te Whetu, Ko Takoha, Ko Maioha, Ko Dominic
Term one, week 3, the children were learning about the Treaty of Waitangi, and the arrival of Maori and Pakeha in the 1800s and the reasons why Pakeha wanted to come and live or work in Aotearoa. As one activity the children worked in small groups to sequence 6 pictures (events). At which they all had to agree, and also talk about and discuss why those pictures belonged there with some support from the teacher.

The Battle of the Mountains
Maori myths and legends
THE BATTLE OF THE MOUNTAINS retold by Peter Gossage.
Writing: For writing we were learning how to retell a Maori myth or legend from the beginning to the end, in our own words.
I hope you enjoy Taureikura's retell.
Long long ago Maui pulled up a huge fish called Te Ika a Maui.
In the middle of the island stood up a group of seven mountains. There was a mighty chief called Tongariro. His wife was the beautiful mountain Pihanga. There was another mountain called Taranaki, he hated Tongariro because he loved Pihanga too. There were two more mountains called Tauhara and Putauaki and they also loved her.
Taranaki started a fight with Tongariro. Then Putauaki and Tauhara threw lava and rocks. They all had a fight but Tongariro was too strong because he had more rocks and lava. The three mountains lost the battle and they retreated and went away.
Retold by Taureikura.
